Everything you describe rings a bell: The typical characteristics of a design thinker - Same as those of a usability analyst or specialist. The working process - almost the same as the standard UX process. 
Understanding users? We call it UCD. 
Multidisciplinary personality and knowledge - defined at Disney as Imagineers - an old concept used to say what you need to become a good UI expert/designer. 
So are we giving a new name to something defined previously?</description>
