Hi Daniel,

Thanks for that post!

I agree the design guidelines for Android aren't very helpful. Guidelines for developers and UX / Visual designers could better be separated. And it would be great if a toolkit would be made for designers to work with.

So far I have found a stencil for Visio
http://www.artfulbits.com/Android/Stencil.aspx

And one for Omnigraffle
http://graffletopia.com/stencils/498

But am still looking for a Fireworks version. If we find the time to make one for ourselves we will let you know!

Regards
Inge

Excellent post. Given our experience in working on almost all mobile platforms, I agree with your sentiments. What we have done at Endeavour is to really educate our customers on what device strengths they can utilize without taking away the strength of the application in one particulat platform. We have had issues with audio streaming and other issues which behave differently way more than the user experience.

Appreciate your blog.

Raghu

Very insightful read.

Have you considered the additional amount of work required to support all mobile platforms? We typically deploy most of our products on several hundred devices, including all sorts of cell phones, iPhone and others. Our framework allows for switches to account for various levels of performance, screen resolutions, supported features, etc. Designers and artists create flows and art resources that match every possibility. I won't detail the entire process but that implies a lot of work and a huuuuge database!

I will say, in short however, that we generally consider iPhone titles to be their own category, as we also would a game on Nintendo DS for instance. While I currently have no experience with Android development, I believe we'll have to account for huge differences in the same way. Nevertheless, we try to re-use as many art assets and features as possible to speed up development.

It's always interesting to understand how others perceive and perform. Cheers!

Nice read Daniel!

Still - based on your research - what would you recommend for clients with a small budget - we are in the Netherlands ;-). Is it wise to start and test for the iPhone to see what happens. Or go for the Android first? Or else?

You might also appreciate this article on prototyping (simple mock up) for the iPhone using FireWorks from my collegue Matthijs Collard:
